DBT Skills Group

This DBT group will run for 10-weeks at the same day and time each week. All sessions will be held virtually. 

What is a DBT Skills Training Group?

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is an effective intervention for treating a broad range of mental health difficulties including anxiety and depression. It combines the principles of behavioural therapy with the importance of acceptance and mindfulness. A DBT skills training group focuses on skill building and helps participants develop a skills-based tool kit that will encourage adaptive coping and response behaviours. In this DBT skills training group we will learn and practice skills in the following four areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Who is this group for?

The DBT skills training group is for folks who are looking for support with emotion regulation, being more present, learning to manage intense emotions, and who want to improve relationships. This group is designed to learn and practice skills. It would be a good fit for anyone who is looking to increase their knowledge and awareness about what skills work best for them and when. 

What is this group about?

This group is a skills training group only. Traditional DBT consists of individual therapy and around the clock phone coaching. However, there is evidence that DBT skills training alone is an effective treatment for a variety of mental health challenges. Skills will be taught by a Psychotherapist with extensive DBT experience and supported by a student therapist. All participants will be provided with a PDF copy of a DBT workbook with home practice and additional information about all of the skills taught. The skills will be taught as interactively as possible, with emphasis on real life application. Participants will be expected to engage in home practice and to take part in discussions. There will be a separate module for each area of focus. In order, the areas of focus are: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. 

Who this group is not for

This group is not a suitable option for anyone who is in immediate crisis. It is also not a support group. Despite this, there will be some opportunities to connect with other group members in pairs or small breakout groups. Due to the extensive amount of material covered in sessions, emphasis is placed on skills training.
