How to Recognize Toxicity in Relationships

While there will be ups and downs in a relationship, while looking at the big picture, a relationship should bring you joy.

Relationships can be great, supporting, and fulfilling if both partners work hard to respect one another, support one another, love each other the way they need to be loved and consider one another throughout their decisions in life.

Relationships can have a massive impact on your well-being. While there will be ups and downs in a relationship, while looking at the big picture, a relationship should bring you joy. Everyone is worthy of having a loving, respectful, joyful relationship.

Toxicity in relationships can be really hard to detect when you’re involved in one. Some people tend to make excuses for their partner’s behaviour.

What is a toxic relationship? A toxic relationship is one that causes you stress, damage and one where you find yourself serving someone at the expense of your feelings, needs and joys.

13 signs of a toxic relationship:

  1. You don’t feel respected by your partner
  2. You feel neglected or exploited
  3. You feel as though you’ve lost yourself
  4. Judgement in your relationship is a normal occurrence
  5. You feel belittled by your partner
  6. You don’t receive empathy from your partner
  7. You feel controlled by your partner
  8. You feel scared to express your feelings
  9. Your needs are not being met
  10. Your partner always finds something wrong with you or what you’re doing
  11. You feel like you’re waiting for something to change
  12. Your partner doesn’t apologize or take responsibility for their actions
  13. You often feel worse when you’re with them. You prefer being alone

While relationships require sacrifice and compromise, it should be equal from both partners. Toxic relationships can be extremely draining and can have a big impact on your mental health and overall well-being. The longer one stays in a toxic relationship, the harder it becomes to leave. It’s important to recognize the signs in order to put yourself first.
