Understanding Depression

Depression is a common and serious mental health condition that affects millions of people around the world. It is characterized by feelings of sadness, worthlessness, and hopelessness. It is sometimes accompanied by physical symptoms, such as fatigue or difficulty sleeping. Depression can be triggered by stressful life events like losing your job or breaking up with your partner. One of the most common risk factors for depression is genetics. Studies have shown that people who have a relative with depression may be more likely to develop it themselves.

What are some signs of depression?

  • Feeling sad, empty or irritable for no apparent reason

  • Lack of interest in activities you used to enjoy

  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions

  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much (insomnia)

Depression is a normal part of life. Everyone goes through it, and sometimes you can't avoid it. But if you've been depressed for a long time and it's keeping you from doing the things you love or even from doing anything at all, it might be time to get help. Depression affects more than just your mood: it can affect your thoughts, your behaviour, and your physical health as well. It's important to remember you are not alone. A mental health professional can help you .

It can be difficult to understand, but there are ways you can help yourself or your loved ones cope with depression.

  1. Talk to someone who understands what you're going through. You might not want to burden friends and family with your struggles, but remember that they want to help—and they want to listen!

  2. Try exercise. Exercise has been proven to help people with depression, and it's also fun! If you feel like you're trapped inside your head all day, try going for a walk or taking up yoga or pilates classes at the gym. The endorphins will make you feel better both physically and mentally!

  3. Eat healthy, having a balanced diet may immediately put you in a better mood. A healthy diet may help as part of your overall treatment.

  4. Try to get enough sleep every night as this will help your body function better overall.
