How Taking Care of Your Body Impacts Mental Health

In an often fast-paced, busy world, caring for your mental health may feel overwhelming. Having what feels like never ending deadlines, not enough time for yourself, difficulty completing weekly tasks or goals, and/or balancing work, school, and your social life all at once is often more difficult than we think. Speaking from experience, managing my day-to-day life can sometimes feel really challenging. The easiest tasks such as brushing my teeth, having a shower, making breakfast and even getting ready for work sometimes feels impossible. I have even felt tired most of the day without realizing the underlying causes.

Lately, I have been wondering about the connection between our mind and body, especially with daylight savings time just beginning. Throughout the week, I have realized that having a good diet, sleeping for 8 hours, going to the gym almost every morning, and spending time with friends and family has significantly improved my mental health, therefore improving my physical health. For a few weeks, I felt exhausted while at home, at work, and even running errands without realizing how important mental clarity is.

I have set a goal to keep myself active physically and take breaks by engaging with the real world. Our mental health and physical health go hand in hand and are both equally important.

Here are a few ways I have maintained my wellbeing:

Going Outdoors

I enjoy going for walks, even just a few laps around the mall helps improve how I am feeling.

Having Structured Mornings

Having a morning routine and sticking to it has helped me to stay motivated for the day ahead of me. For example, having specific times to shower, have breakfast, grab a coffee, and do yoga helps me feel more regulated.

Planning Meals

Printing out a calendar and writing out 3 meals per day helps me to stay on track with my busy week and know what to cook after a long day.

Making Time for Friends

Spending time with my co-workers outside of work has really helped me feel a sense of belonging and happiness. Even 1-2 hours at a cafe for lunch really helps increase my mood before my shift.

Maintaining a Proper Sleep Schedule

Sleeping 8 hours a day every day has helped improve my mood, mental clarity, and makes me feel more well rested and ready to tackle my busy week.

Overall Thoughts

It is important to take the time to care for our mental and physical wellbeing even when it feels like we do not have enough time in our busy lives. Being able to find the time for things that we enjoy and give us energy such as hanging out with our friends or a holiday coffee as a pick me up are really important. We often forget that the simple things in life and our hobbies help keep us grounded.

Remember to take some time for yourself and practice mindfulness each day. Stress and constantly being busy can take a toll on our mental and physical health. It is important to stay grounded and connected to the things and people that bring us joy.
