Recognizing Your Intrinsic Value and Self-Worth

In a society shaped by expectations and consumerism, it is common to overlook our intrinsic value. Overall, this can lead to comparisons with others, intense feelings of inadequacy, and doubts about our self-worth. This blog post serves as a reminder that your value is defined by your individuality, characterized by your distinct qualities, interests, hobbies and potential. Let’s enter the mindset to re-discover ourselves as we learn to appreciate and embrace our authentic selves.

Understanding Your Intrinsic Value

Intrinsic Self-Esteem: Take some time for self-reflection. Consider what is important to you, what brings you happiness, and what your personal strengths are. This type of self-esteem originates from within, grounded in your values, beliefs, and intrinsic worth. It is shaped by self-perception and aligns with your principles, rather than relying on external opinions.

Extrinsic Self-Esteem: In contrast, extrinsic self-esteem is influenced by how others view you. It relies on external validation like compliments, achievements, or recognition. While praise can temporarily boost your confidence, this form of self-esteem is not sustainable. For instance, criticism or a lack of acknowledgement can quickly lead to self-doubt and negative self-perception. Therefore, concentrating on intrinsic self-esteem can foster a more profound and resilient sense of self-worth. By aligning your actions with your core values and recognizing your unique strengths, you can cultivate a lasting sense of identity. Overall, this isn’t about what you do, how you look or what you own. It’s about the inherent worth that exists simply because you are you. So- how can we celebrate your uniqueness?

Celebrating Your Unique Qualities

You do not need to conform to a mold to feel like you belong. It is important to remember that when we embrace our individuality, it allows us to live authentically and connect with others in more meaningful ways. Your quirks, imperfections and passions are what make you, you. It can be easy to want to hide these from others, but when you stop trying to hide and change these parts of yourself, you’ll start to grow. Notably, it can be helpful to avoid seeing imperfections as “obstacles”. Instead, we can view them as opportunities to learn, improve and connect with others who appreciate you as you are.

Building Your Self-Worth

Remember that building your personal self-worth is an ongoing journey! Self-care, self- compassion and building healthy relationships are powerful tools you can lean into along the way.

1. Prioritize Self-Care Take care of your mind, body and spirit. Whether it’s a quiet walk in nature, journaling your thoughts or spending time with loved ones, it is so important to make time for what nourishes you. When we feed our minds with positive affirmations and seek support when needed, we tell ourselves that we are deserving of love and attention.

2. Practice Self-Compassion Being kind to yourself is a fundamental part of self-compassion. It includes showing oneself the same empathy and understanding that you would offer a friend in need. When a mistake is made, it is important to remind yourself that making mistakes is part of being human. By practicing self-compassion, you again reinforce the belief that you’re worthy of love and acceptance.

3. Build Healthy Relationships It is so important to surround yourself with people who see your worth and encourage your growth. It can be so freeing to let go of toxic influences that make you question your value and do not serve you. When we surround ourselves with the right people, we are reminded of our own worth and encouraged to grow in positive, healthy ways that benefit us and our self- worth.

So lets move forward with our day reminding ourselves that we are not defined by societies standards. Your value is unique and irreplaceable. Although the journey to finding oneself is not always easy, every step you take towards the development of your self-worth brings you closer to the confident, authentic person you are meant to be. Keep celebrating your individuality, nurturing your well-being and embracing your imperfections. They are what make you- you!
