While talk therapy can be incredibly powerful, talking alone sometimes may not be enough. That’s because trauma doesn’t just live in our minds, it also lives in our bodies!
When people think of stress responses, most are familiar with fight (getting angry, defensive, or confrontational) and flight (anxious energy, wanting to escape or avoid).
We often think of emotional regulation as something we have to do on our own: “I need to calm myself down,” or “I should handle this better.”
When you’re struggling, how do you usually talk to yourself? For many people, the inner voice is more of a harsh critic than a supportive friend. Phrases like “I should be over this by now” or “Why can’t I handle this better?” can come up quickly when we’re under stress.

As a psychotherapy practice based in Kitchener, Ontario, we acknowledge that our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabeg peoples. This land is part of the Haldimand Tract, which was promised to the Six Nations of the Grand River.
We recognize the longstanding relationships with the land that Indigenous peoples have maintained as its original caretakers. Our practice extends its services across Canada, and we acknowledge that our work spans many traditional Indigenous territories. We recognize that there are 46 treaties and other agreements that cover the territory now called Ontario. As we operate in various locations, we commit to learning about and respecting the specific Indigenous communities in each area where we provide our services.
